Industrial Atomizer Benefits

Industrial Benefits
Design and Theory

Over and above the features discussed in the comparison chart, Proptec and Penguin atomizers have advantages for engineers, MRO professionals, and HVAC installers who are looking for high performance components. A few of these advantages:

  • Modularity. All hubs and baskets are fully interchangeable. Want to tweak or tailor your performance to get the spray pattern "just right"? Designing and experimenting with Proptec in your designs is easy and painless.

  • Efficiency. In total cost, our atomizers cost pennies per hour to operate, and can help you keep other processes worth thousands of dollars per hour up and operating.

  • Sanitary. Proptec and Penguin atomizers have no reservoirs, catchments, or other places where liquids can accumulate and grow bacteria and molds. For humidification or other aqueous applications, our rotary atomizers make clean mist with no surprises.

  • Suitability guarantee. Try your Proptec Atomizer for 45 days. Buy a few spare parts to mix and match configurations. If you don't like the result, for any reason, exchange it or return any or all of the parts for refund, and we will gladly take it back. A 35% restock fee applies. Call for complete details.

  • Complete systems capability. Do you know the end result you need, but don't have the time or resources to get there in-house? We can engineer a complete system for you, with fluid metering, power system, and the properly designed atomizer for the task. Stationary, mobile, large atomizer arrays- we're ready to help.

Rotary atomization basics:

How does it work?
As you read in the introduction, Proptec atomizers are Rotary atomizers, spinning the fluid from a central hub using centripetal force to make coarse droplets, then in some applications, adding a second stage atomizer where the coarse droplets go through a second impact stage where they are further reduced to a finer droplet spectrum. The rotary motion comes from either a hydraulic or electric motor. Hydraulic is the preferred motor if possible as they are much better at enduring high speeds with a long life than other types of motors. Our electric versions are designed to operate at lower speeds for the longest life possible.

What does the spray pattern look like?
Rotary atomizers create a radial spray pattern, from 3 to 15 feet in radius. This will depend on the droplet size, flow rate, and atomizer speed. In air-assisted versions, this radial pattern can be directed into a cone that can carry as far as 50-100', depending on operational conditions. This pattern makes rotary atomizers particularly good inside stacks or in round tanks. Air assisted Rotary atomizers can infuse large enclosed areas such as greenhouses with mist in very sort periods of time.

How can a rotary atomizer improve my process?
Makes short work of difficult fluids. Rotary atomizers are unique in that no hydraulic pressure is necessary, and there is no nozzle. Because they do not rely on nozzle geometry or pressure to create spray, they are well-suited to abrasive or viscous materials, up to 10,000 centipoise (axle grease). With abrasive materials, physical wear of the atomizer will have little to no effect on the spray pattern until the atomizer is physically totally abraded away. This can be replaced in less than 5 minutes.

Rotary atomizers can spray difficult things like:

  • Honey
  • Adhesives
  • Molasses
  • Bentonite clay
  • oils
  • Fish emulsion

Often these materials can be sprayed undiluted, reducing the cost of removing the water/solvent from the finished product later in the process.

Great for other materials too
Don't think that you have to have a difficult material to use a rotary atomizer. Great for humidification, fumigation, dispersion of odor control chemicals where only a few ounces per minute are sprayed.

Handles wide variations in flow
Your Proptec or Penguin atomizer will have a flow rating, typically something like 0-2 or 0-3.5 gallons per minute. The atomizer will operate satisfactorily within that entire range. If you have a variable process where your flow rate can vary, a rotary atomizer can make it very simple to keep your process consistent, even under varying conditions. For some more specific examples, see the Droplet spectral data link at right.

Low cost of operation
Depending on the configuration and the process, your atomizers will typically cost between 8 and 20 cents per hour to operate. They will not require expensive physical plant upgrades for compressed air or heavy power. In humidifying applications, a Penguin atomizer, atomizing 2 gallons per minute of water, can be very competitive compared to the installation cost of an array of high pressure fogging nozzles, running only on water line pressure, and require much less maintenance.

Modular design:
Proptec and Penguin atomizers are designed with an array of mounting options to make implementing them in your process a snap. With the wide assortment of interchangeable design options and operational speeds, you have the power to vary and adjust your atomizer to a perfect spectrum for your process.

How long will it last/ what are the maintenance intervals?
The answer to this will depend largely on the process you are using them in. Typically, with dilute mildly abrasive slurries, it is typical to see 1000 to 3000 hours of life on the atomizer basket. With clean fluids, the atomizer and hub will last indefinitely. With properly filtered and maintained hydraulic fluid, the hydraulic motors have exceeded 9000 hours of continuous use. Depending on the model, There are vibration isolating mounts that will need replacing every 2-6 years.

With sticky or caking materials, the atomizer will need to be periodically powerwashed. Certain materials will require periodic dis-assembly and cleaning of the hub and basket if they become encrusted. Disassembly and replacement of the parts takes less than 5 minutes, with the removal of only 1 nut. It is common in these type of applications to keep a spare set so that ready-to use parts are always on hand while the others undergo cleaning.
